HTML is what powers the Internet.

But it isn't programming.

It's a page description language -- a way of describing what you want to appear on a web page.

It's static. Whatever you specify just lays there like an exhibit in a museum.

Pretty boring. And that's why a clever guy called Brendan Eich invented Javascript back in 1995 -- it lets web pages come alive and be properly programmed. Just like Scratch, but much much more powerfully.

 

Why do we care?

Because even the coolest Javascript game has to live on a webpage. It might be a pretty minimal webpage, but it's got to have one.
